For business

All Victorian licence and learner permit holders can now go digital. If your business or organisation checks licences, you may get people showing you their phone instead of a card.

The good news is checking digital credentials is a safe and simple way to verify info when you need to. You’ll be able to check licences quicker, and you’ll know the details come straight from official records. You can scan licences and digital cards through the app, or using hardware from the major ID scanning providers.

Don’t worry, plastic licence cards will still be around. You can accept them until you're ready to check digital.

An easy and secure way to check ID

A digital driver licence links a person’s official records to their mobile.

Digital licences have QR codes you can scan to:

  • check a full driver licence
  • confirm someone’s basic ID details, or
  • check a person is over 18.

The digital licence shows you when the app last pulled info from the Victorian Licensing Registry. If the info isn’t current, you can ask the customer to pull down to refresh. This way you know it’s current, and legit.

Getting your business ready

People can have digital driver licences in both the Service Victoria and myVicRoads apps. Make sure you have both apps on any device you use to scan licences.

Always be sure to download the official versions of these apps from the Apple App Store and Google Play.

We’re also working with leading ID scanning providers. If your venue uses hardware to scan IDs, there’s a good chance your scanner can now read government-issued digital driver credentials. Ask your scanning vendor about when they’re ready to accept digital IDs.

You’ll want to think about how to get your business ready to accept digital licences. It could take time to work out the right systems and processes for your business. You can always continue to check plastic cards.

Frequently Asked Questions

When people refresh their licence, it updates straight from the official database. This means that when you scan a licence, you know the info is coming from a trusted source.

When you scan someone’s digital card, you’ll see when they last refreshed their info.

Even if someone has had their licence suspended, you can still check they are over 18 or see their address.

People still need to renew their licences to keep them current.

Right now, there’s no way for someone to share a copy of their digital licence for you to store. You’ll need to copy their plastic licence. You shouldn’t hold onto copies of customer details unless you really need to. Keeping copies of this info is a fraud risk.

We don’t recommend that anyone shares screen shots of digital driver licences.

We’re working with a number of trusted ID scanning providers. Right now, hundreds of venues across the state can now use their patron entry record systems to scan Service Victoria QR codes.

If your business uses hardware from an ID scanning vendor, check with them to see if they can scan our QR codes.
