Identity referee

Introduction

To be able to confirm your identity with Service Victoria you need at least 2 types of ID. If you only have 2 types of ID without a photo, you can choose to use an identity referee instead.

What is an identity referee?

An identity referee is someone that you’re close to who confirm you are who you say you are. Once they’ve done this for you, you’ll have a verified identity on Service Victoria. You can then easily apply for a wide range of our services.

This process is entirely online.

Who can be your identity referee

The person you choose must:

  • be 18 or older
  • have known you at least 12 months
  • not be in a relationship with you
  • not be related to you
  • not be someone you live with

You should also make sure the person you choose:

  • agrees to be your referee
  • is available to complete the reference check
  • can verify their own identity with ID documents

What does your identity referee need to do?

Your chosen identity referee will need to confirm their own identity through Service Victoria.

To do this they’ll need to provide us at least 2 ID documents with 1 being a photo ID. They’ll also need to answer some questions about you which will help us confirm your identity.

Your referee doesn’t need to have their own account, but it’s faster if they do.

How long does it take?

If your referee has all of the ID we need, it should only take about 15 minutes.

What happens if my referee doesn’t respond?

You can request another referee at any time. This will cancel any other requests you’ve made.

What if my referee doesn’t receive the email?

Make sure your referee has checked their spam or junk mail folders. If they still can’t find the email, try the process again making sure you’ve entered their email correctly. If it still doesn’t work, make sure you check the email is correct with them.

How long does my referee have to respond?

Your referee has 90 days to verify you before the link expires. If this happens you can request the same or a different referee through the identity verification process.

What happens after my referee confirms my identity?

You’ll receive an email confirming we’ve verified your identity.

You can then use your verified identity to quickly and easily apply for a wide range of services through Service Victoria.
